The IFCR is excited to kick off our 2014 webinar series with a discussion on Medical Advocacy led by Dr. Tim Benke, MD, PhD. Dr. Benke also heads up our CDKL5 Center of Excellence at Children’s Hospital in Colorado.

When faced with the diagnosis of CDKL5, many parents feel overwhelmed and intimidated. Understanding that you are an advocate for your child is critical to helping your child and family live the best life possible.

Tim Benke, MD, PhD

Director, Pediatric Neurosciences Research

Dr. Benke is a pediatric neurologist with a special interest in the care of Rett and Rett-related disorders. As Medical Director for the Rett Clinic, Dr. Benke, with the RN coordinator, is responsible for the overall medical management of the clinic. This includes ensuring that communications and recommendations from Rett Clinic providers are accurate, timely and actionable for families and referring primary care physicians. Dr. Benke addresses neurological issues such as epilepsy and movement disorders as part of Rett Clinic evaluations.

Dr. Benke directs clinical research within the Rett Clinic; the goal of this research is to determine effective treatment and care for our patients, including clinical trials. As Director of Pediatric Neurology Research, Dr. Benke oversees clinical, basic and translational research within the Neurosciences Institute at CHCO; Dr. Benke is Co-Investigator on the NIH-NINDS NeuroNext grant for multi-site clinical trials in neurology. Along with the Rett clinic, and a team of 15 specialits, Dr. Benke heads the CDKL5 clinic at Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Dr. Benke also conducts translational/bench research to determine the impact of seizures on the developing brain and other genetic causes of epilepsy and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Dr. Benke joined the University of Colorado School of Medicine/Children’s Hospital Colorado faculty in 2002. Prior to this, Dr. Benke was on faculty at Baylor College of Medicine/Texas Children’s Hospital where he also completed his M.D., Ph.D. and post-graduate training in Medicine, Neuroscience, Pediatrics and Pediatric Neurology. Dr. Benke did additional post-graduate training in Neuropharmacology at the University of Bristol, Bristol, U.K.
